One of the first areas of the face to exhibit signs of aging is the area around the eyes. Under-eye bags and sagging upper eyelids can give an appearance of age well beyond the person’s years. In addition, overly sagging lids can affect a person’s field of view, a functional challenge that must be corrected. When this is the case, a blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery can be scheduled. This relatively minor cosmetic surgery procedure can refresh the appearance of the face and leave it looking years younger.
Upper Lid Blepharoplasty is a type of surgery that alters the appearance of the upper eyelids to improve the look of the area surrounding the eyes and to improve vision obscured by drooping eyelids. Local anesthetic and sedation are all that’s needed to allow for a painless, pleasant experience.
The operation differs according to the details of the surgery, but generally, the upper eyelid can be corrected through an incision within the natural crease of the eyelid. Then, Dr. Friedman will reposition or remove fat deposits, and remove any excess skin, which ultimately tightens the muscles. The incisions are typically closed with removable stitches or skin adhesives (glue). The entire procedure typically takes one hour.
It is important that you follow all postoperative instructions provided by Dr. Friedman and his staff. This will include information about bandages, taking an antibiotic if prescribed, and the level and type of activity that is safe. You will also be provided detailed instructions about the normal symptoms you will experience and any potential signs of complications. The amount of time it takes for recovery varies, generally one week to 10 days. Strict guidelines are to be followed for the first two weeks following the procedure to maximize healing and your final appearance.
