The mid-face includes the cheek area below the eyelids and the area next to the nose and mouth lines. As you age, repeated muscle contraction and your overall lifestyle can cause the skin, fat, and muscle in this area to move downward. When this occurs, the cheeks begin to look saggy or flat, the lower eyelids can become puffy or hollow, and circles begin to appear under the eyes. As a result, a mid-facelift may be the path to restoring your more youthful features.
For many, a conventional facelift may not completely treat the upper cheek and lower eyelid areas of the face. A cheek lift raises the fat pocket within the cheek (called the malar fat pad), giving fullness to the eyes and cheeks – resulting in a rejuvenated and revitalized look. Results of the mid-facelift are typically more long-lasting than those offered by injectables, and recovery from a mid-facelift is faster than a traditional facelift.
To achieve the look, small incisions are made around the hairline and ear, the fat pads within the cheeks are lifted, and stitches are then placed in the fat pads as they are pulled back up to their initial position. The surgery lasts approximately two hours, unless additional procedures are being completed at the same time.
A cheek lift is performed under general anesthesia or conscious sedation and is performed as an outpatient procedure. Recovery usually takes 7 to 10 days, with most patients requiring only a week off from work or other regular activities. Dr. Friedman and his staff will schedule any necessary post-operative appointments as well as provide you will all instructions needed for your continued self-care at home during your recovery.
